According to escn.com, the Egyptian government recently signed a Capacity Purchase Agreement (CPA) with Dubai-based renewable energy developer AMEA Power for the deployment of two large-scale battery energy storage projects, which are the first battery energy storage systems of their kind to be deployed in Egypt.

AMEA Power announced on February 25 that it has signed a capacity purchase agreement (CPA) with the Egyptian government for two battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 1,500 MWh.

One of the battery storage projects is a 500MWh battery storage system located in the village of Zafarana on the Gulf of Suez coast, about 215 kilometers from the Egyptian capital, Cairo. The other project is the Benban 1000MWh battery storage project, located about 700 kilometers south of Cairo.AMEA Power will also build transformers and grid connection infrastructure.

The total installed capacity of the two energy storage projects was not disclosed in the announcement by AMEA Power and the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, which is under the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

However, AMEA Power said that “the deployment of these two standalone battery energy storage projects in Egypt will enhance grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy in the country's national energy mix.”

Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, said that independently deployed energy storage systems will maximize renewable energy benefits while enhancing grid balance and stability during periods of peak electricity demand.

Esmat also spoke about the contribution of these projects to Egypt's renewable energy goals and the reduction of fossil fuel use and related emissions.

Last November, the Egyptian government reaffirmed that 42 percent of the country's electricity generation by 2030 will come from renewable sources. According to Reuters, a report released in July last year showed that solar, wind and hydro power accounted for 11.5 percent of Egypt's power generation mix.

The capacity purchase agreement (CPA) was signed by Mona Rizk, chairman of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and Aquel Bohra, chief investment officer of AMEA Power. The meeting was also attended by Mahmoud Esmat, Hamida El-Sanea, general manager of EETC's renewable energy department, and Ahmed Hafez, business development manager at AMEA Power. However, the terms and financial details of the agreement were not disclosed to the public.

Egypt's Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy said a few days ago that it has held talks with Saudi power and infrastructure developer ACWA Power and China's State Grid Corporation to discuss partnerships and cooperation in renewable energy, battery storage system development and grid construction.

In September 2024, EETC, AMEA Power and Norwegian renewable energy developer Scatec signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for two solar + storage projects.

These include a 1GW solar farm developed by AMEA Power in the Benban region with the deployment of a 600MWh battery storage system, and the expansion of the 500MW Abydos solar farm by the UAE developer with the deployment of a 300MWh battery storage system.

The recently announced deal brings AMEA Power's deployment of battery storage systems in Egypt to 2,400MWh, while the company says it is developing solar and wind farms in Egypt with a total capacity of 2,500MW. the company claims to have invested as much as $3bn in projects it has developed in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Scatec will deploy a 1GW solar farm in Egypt, accompanied by a 100MW/200MWh battery storage system.
