SVOLT Energy Suspends Construction of Two German Battery Plants Amid Industry Challenges
2024-10-26 9:03

SVOLT Energy Technology has decided to suspend the construction of its two battery plant projects in Germany, with no set timeline for resumption. Public information reveals that SVOLT had originally planned to build two factories in Germany. One is a battery module and assembly (Pack) plant located in Saarland, announced in November 2020, with a designed capacity of 24 GWh and a total investment of €2 billion. It was initially expected to be completed by mid-2024. The other is a battery cell factory with an annual capacity of 16 GWh, announced in September 2022, and located in Brandenburg. This was SVOLT’s first overseas battery cell factory, originally planned to begin production in 2025, but construction was already suspended by mid-2024.

SVOLT Energy Technology Co., Ltd. is a specialized lithium-ion battery system provider, originating from Great Wall Motors’ Power Battery Division, established in 2016 and spun off in 2018. According to the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance, SVOLT’s installed capacity in the first nine months of this year reached 9.97 GWh, with a domestic market share of 2.9%. Due to the siphoning effect of BYD and CATL, the market share of second-tier battery companies generally remains in the single digits.
