Panasonic: Commercialization of perovskite BIPV in 2026
2024-07-31 15:43

Recently, Panasonic Holdings (HD) announced that it will commercialize "power generation glass" (BIPV), which integrates perovskite solar cells and building materials, in 2026. Panasonic expects to achieve its goal of starting mass production two years ahead of schedule. Compared with conventional solar cells, perovskite solar cells have a higher degree of freedom in installation position, which is expected to be the key to the popularization of renewable energy.

Panasonic plans to start the construction of an original production line at its R&D site in Moriguchi City, Osaka Prefecture at the end of 2024 to manufacture products with actual dimensions of 1 meter × 1.8 meters. Its  goal is mass production as soon as possible. Tatsuo Ogawa, the company's Chief Technology Officer (CTO), said, "We hope to release the product to the world in test form by the end of FY26 in order to be accepted by our customers. At the same time, we hope to contribute to the spread of renewable energy by significantly increasing the power generation capacity in urban areas. ”

Panasonic Group (Panasonic) is a Japan company involved in the perovskite solar cell industry. Taisuke Matsui of Panasonic Group has been researching perovskite solar cells since 2014 and has worked closely with research institutes such as the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland and the University of Tokyo.

In August 2023, Panasonic Holdings began testing and demonstrating a prototype version of its perovskite photovoltaic material. The prototypes are translucent glass railing-type photovoltaic panels installed on the balcony of a model house near Tokyo, each nearly 1 meter high and 4 meters wide. Based on this material, Panasonic Holdings plans to fully enter the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) industry.

In 2023, Panasonic has been certified by a third-party measurement agency to have a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 18.1% as a module of practical size (effective area of power generation of more than 800 square centimeters).
