Tesla Plans 10 to 20 More Gigafactories Worldwide
2017-06-14 15:52

Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla Inc., announced to build 10 to 20 more Gigafactories around the world in the future to fulfill the market. He also revealed that Tesla will select locations for three to four more upcoming factories.

Elon Musk expected that it requires 100 Gigafactories’ capacity to fulfill demands from the world’s electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESSs) products. Such an expectation indicated that Tesla may target at supplying batteries to 10% of the world’s EVs and ESSs.

Gigafactory 1, located in Nevada, USA, is now operating and producing li-ion batteries. Once Gigafactory 1 has successfully ramped up to its full capacity, it will be capable of producing more li-ion batteries than the totality of the world’s rest manufacturers. In addition, by cooperating with Panasonic, Tesla can produce advanced and pricing li-ion batteries in Gigafactories.

Elon Musk announced on its Twitter account that the new Gigafactories’ sites would be selected by the end of 2017. He also disclosed that the new Gigafactories will be “close to the end customer.” Furthermore, one of the new Gigafactories will adopt different production equipment from others for producing new SUV Model Y EVs.
