Hawaiian Electric Company’s Campbell Industrial Park Generating Station, the largest commercial combustion turbine power plant fueled entirely with renewable biodiesel, has added solar power. Island Pacific Energy has completed installation of the 128-kW 450-photovoltaic panel system mounted to provide shade to the plant parking lot.

The solar panel system provides power for routine operations of the power plant and includes two electric vehicle chargers.

The 120-megawatt generating station has been in service since 2009. In addition to using renewable biofuel exclusively, the plant uses non-potable, recycled water for all industrial operations.

“Campbell Industrial Park is one of the sunniest places on Oahu,” said Robert Isler, manager of generation project development. “This solar array, the largest owned by the utility, takes advantage of that and also provides shade for 34 employee and visitor vehicles.”
