Saft, the designer and manufacturer of high-tech industrial batteries, is focusing on the key role that energy storage is now playing in smoothing the integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) schemes within power grids. Visitors to stand C6 in Hall B7 at the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (EU PVSEC) will see Saft’s evolving portfolio of advanced battery technologies that ensure effective and efficient lithium-ion (Li-ion) energy storage in on-grid applications that range from fostering residential self-consumption schemes to containerized megawatt scale installations, all the way down to kilowatt scale nickel-based battery systems for self-contained, off-grid, installations.
A key item of interest at EU PVSEC will be the Synerion high-energy Li-ion modules. These have been developed to provide the smart energy storage for residential/community PV schemes that will foster the increased level of self-consumption desired by a growing number of consumers who now wish to operate independently of utility supplies. Also on show is Intensium Max, a containerized megawatt scale Li-ion energy storage solution that makes renewable generation predictable and grid compatible.
Nickel-based technologies on display include Sunica.plus batteries for off-grid renewable energy applications and Smart VHT nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) modules optimized for small off-grid renewable applications. For PV-powered telecom installations, Saft is featuring its new high energy Evolion Li-ion system designed specifically to deliver the maximum possible performance within a limited cabinet space.
Synerion modules promote domestic self-consumption
Saft Synerion Li-ion modules provide the basis for flexible, maintenance-free, energy storage solutions that will significantly increase domestic self-consumption and help encourage the roll out of distributed residential and small commercial renewable energy solutions. Synerion systems are designed to ‘time-shift’ power generated during peak production times – during the middle of the day for solar energy - to peak demand times, mainly during the evening. This approach enhances the value of the PV system as a larger proportion of the electricity produced can be consumed locally, so that only surplus energy is fed back into the grid.
Intensium Max - megawatt scale storage in a container
Saft’s Intensium Max is a ready-to-install containerized solution that provides a complete, fully integrated energy storage system at the megawatt scale comprising Li-ion battery modules, power management and control interfaces, air conditioning and safety devices. Intensium Max can smooth intermittent generation and reduce ramp rates, as well as helping to manage power flows within medium voltage grids, making solar energy a predictable and manageable contributor to the overall energy mix.
Sunica.plus for 20 years of reliable operation in off-grid PV installations
Sunica.plus batteries are based on Saft’s mature, proven pocket nickel-based technology. They are optimized for use in PV applications where they perform beyond conventional limits. The robust Sunica.plus design ensures 20 years of reliable operation, even in the harshest conditions, such as the extreme temperatures found in deserts, with only minimal maintenance.
Smart VHT Ni-MH modules for small off-grid PV installations
Saft Smart VHT Ni-MH modules are specifically designed to meet the needs of small off-grid PV systems. They offer better performance, lower total cost of ownership (TCO), improved integration and better environmental profile than traditional batteries. The Smart VHT Module enables direct integration of smart electronics – such as seamless charge/discharge management, battery condition logging and accurate state of health indicator – removing the need for separate PV controllers.
Evolion delivers high energy for PV powered telecom sites
Saft’s new high energy Evolion Li-ion telecom battery system is ideally suited for PV powered telecom sites where it delivers the maximum possible performance within the limited space available within cabinets, while also ensuring the optimum TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for both OEMs and network operators. The result is an innovative battery concept that offers interesting new possibilities for the creation of compact, safe and reliable backup systems for a wide variety of telecom installations including: outdoor on-grid sites and off-grid hybrid power systems.
The compact Evolion design offers a particular advantage in locations where space is at a premium, as it requires only half the space needed by a conventional VRLA battery. Another important benefit of Li-ion technology for remote installations is that the zero maintenance design eliminates the need for routine site visits.
