ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth $10 million from Energinet.dk, the Danish national power utility and transmission system operator, to supply a 400 kilovolt (kV) gas insulated switchgear (GIS) to help increase the share of wind energy in the Danish grid.
ABB will design, engineer, supply and commission the 400kV GIS and equipment supporting the connections. It will be installed in an indoor gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation, which will support a new 400 kV (kilovolt) transmission connection between the substations at Kassø and Tjele, as well as linking with the German and Norwegian grids.
One of the main reasons for building the new link is to help Denmark's power system integrate large amounts of renewable energy, an important element in Denmark’s ambitious climate policy.The new interconnection will double the transmission capacity and improve security of power supply with the help of interconnections linked to grids in neighboring countries, replacing an existing line that is 45 years old. Power security is an important factor when integrating renewable energies like wind, due to their unpredictable and inconsistent nature.
