EnergyTrend has learned that, according to foreign media reports, on August 17 local time, Sungrow held a groundbreaking ceremony for its energy storage system (ESS) factory located in the TEDA Industrial Zone within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Egypt.

The factory involves a planned total investment of $50 million (approx. RMB 339 million) and covers an area of approximately 50,000 m². It has a planned annual capacity of 10GWh for energy storage systems and is scheduled to be completed and operational by April 2027.

This represents Sungrow's first energy storage system manufacturing base in the Middle East and Africa, as well as the MENA region's first dedicated energy storage system factory. The project's cooperation and land agreements were signed in January 2026, leading to the groundbreaking on August 17—a turnaround of just seven months, marking exceptionally rapid progress for a large-scale overseas clean energy manufacturing project.

According to the plans, the plant will primarily focus on battery energy storage system (BESS) assembly and production. While targeting Egypt's domestic market, the facility will leverage the port and logistics advantages of the Suez Canal Economic Zone to serve the Middle East and Africa, as well as reach Southern Europe.

Notably, the factory will directly supply equipment for the 4GWh energy storage component of the "Energy Valley" utility-scale solar-plus-storage project developed by Norwegian renewable energy firm Scatec in Minya Governorate, Egypt.

Khaled Hashem, Egypt's Minister of Industry, attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Sungrow's Suez plant. Hashem stated that the establishment of Sungrow's ESS facility represents a pivotal step toward building Egypt's domestic energy storage manufacturing base.

For Sungrow, the Egyptian plant serves as another key overseas physical manufacturing hub following its facility in Poland. In February this year, Sungrow announced Poland as the site for its first manufacturing facility in Europe.

Sungrow's Poland plant represents a total investment of approximately €230 million (approx. RMB 1.802 billion) and covers an area of 65,400 m². The new facility is designed for an annual manufacturing capacity of 20GW in PV inverters and 12.5GWh in energy storage systems, with completion and commissioning expected within the next 12 months.
