JA Solar to Build Plant in South Africa
2025-06-23 16:07

According to foreign media reports, JA Solar and South African photovoltaic manufacturer ARTsolar reached a cooperation to expand the scale of local PV module production.

According to the agreement, ARTsolar will upgrade its factory in Durban into a 340MW high-efficiency large-size JA Solar module production line. According to the information, ARTsolar was established in 2010 and is a 100% South African local enterprise.

The solar panels will meet international quality standards while being customizable to meet local project needs, the parties said. Against the backdrop of a tight global supply chain, the plant is expected to reduce reliance on imports and shorten project lead times.

The partnership is said to support South Africa's Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (RMIPPPP), which aims to address energy shortages and attract private sector investment in utility-scale clean energy projects. South Africa's installed solar capacity ranks first on the African continent, and will continue to prioritize local manufacturing in future project tenders.

According to the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPIA), South Africa's installed solar capacity will be 1.1GW in 2024, down from 2.6GW in 2023. despite a slowdown in growth last year, the growing pool of utility-scale projects driven by private procurement is expected to accelerate deployment in the coming years.
