According to Wechat Official Account @ofweeklibattery, on April 21, 2025, CATL's inaugural Super Tech Day witnessed the grand unveiling of three groundbreaking power battery products – the Sodium-ion Battery for Passenger Vehicles, the SHENERGI Twin Core Battery, and the second generation SHENXING Superfast Charging Battery – alongside a battery energy storage system product, the Sodium-ion 24V Battery for Heavy-Duty Trucks. These disruptive innovations push technological boundaries and usher in a multi-core era for the new energy industry!

CATL's Sodium-ion Battery, the world's first mass-produced sodium-ion battery, breaks through resource limitations and solidifies the foundation of new energy. The SHENERGI Twin Core Battery pioneers a novel cross-chemistry system design, overcoming the technical constraints of single-track approaches and catering to customized user needs. The second generation SHENXING Superfast Charging Battery, with a peak charging rate of 12C, once again shatters global supercharging records.

Sodium-ion Battery: Breakthrough Performance and Convenience, Solidifying the Foundation of New Energy

CATL's Sodium-ion Battery transcends the performance limitations of materials themselves, marking the first time a sodium-ion battery has been mass-produced on a large scale. Leveraging sodium's inherent safety and abundant reserves, it will effectively reduce reliance on lithium resources, strengthen the foundation of new energy, and propel energy utilization from "single resource dependence" towards "energy freedom."

The Sodium-ion Battery encompasses two product categories: the Sodium-ion Battery for Passenger Vehicles and the Sodium-ion 24V Battery for Heavy-Duty Trucks. Both achieve full temperature range adaptability from -40℃ to 70℃, redefining the extreme temperature range for batteries. Notably, the Sodium-ion Battery for Passenger Vehicles can still retain 90% of its usable power at -40℃. Even in extreme conditions with only 10% SOC (State of Charge) remaining, the vehicle's power performance with the Sodium-ion Passenger Vehicle Battery experiences virtually no degradation at -40℃, truly achieving "extreme cold as normal temperature."

The Sodium-ion Passenger Vehicle Battery boasts an energy density of 175Wh/kg, currently the highest globally for sodium-ion batteries, comparable to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. It supports a peak charging rate of 5C and a range of 500 kilometers, achieving a lifespan of over 10,000 cycles while significantly reducing maintenance costs. In terms of safety, the Sodium-ion Battery eliminates the combustion-supporting factors in battery thermal runaway from the material's intrinsic level, achieving a leapfrog breakthrough in battery safety from "passive defense" to "inherent safety."

CATL's Sodium-ion 24V Battery for Heavy-Duty Trucks has a lifespan exceeding 8 years, with a total cost of ownership reduced by 61% compared to traditional lead-acid batteries over its entire lifecycle. Furthermore, the Sodium-ion heavy-duty truck battery offers advantages such as full depth of discharge, one-key start at -40℃, and the ability to start after being stored for a year. Compared to lead-acid batteries, it is more efficient, environmentally friendly, and economical, driving commercial vehicles into a new era of "lead-free world, battery life equals vehicle life."

CATL's significant breakthroughs in the performance of sodium-ion batteries address the application shortcomings of batteries in extremely cold environments. The performance breakthrough of sodium-ion batteries is a crucial step towards the full-scenario application of batteries. It is against this backdrop that CATL's SHENERGI Twin Core Battery was born.

SHENERGI Twin Core Battery: Ushering in a Multi-Core Era of Energy Freedom

The SHENERGI Twin Core Battery is a flagship product deeply integrating CATL's dual-core architecture and self-healing anode technology. The dual-core architecture signifies that the battery pack possesses two powerful "independent energy zones" and features five major dual-core functions: high-voltage dual-core, low-voltage dual-core, structural dual-core, thermal management dual-core, and thermal runaway safety protection dual-core. This ensures the continuity, stability, and safety of power output. This dual-core design and intelligent software coordination will provide more stable and reliable power supply guarantees for vehicles in the future L3 and L4 autonomous driving era.

Among these, the "self-healing anode technology" represents a disruptive breakthrough at the atomic level. It can increase the battery's volume energy density by 60% and weight energy density by 50%, allowing for more electricity to be configured within the same battery pack space, supporting longer ranges. This technology can be flexibly adapted to various material systems. When paired with ternary systems, the energy density can be increased to over 1000Wh/L.

The SHENERGI Twin Core Battery's pioneering "electricity-electricity range extension" technology can intelligently regulate the allocation strategy of the two energy zones based on the vehicle's driving status and the user's driving habits. The main energy zone can adapt battery cells of different chemical systems according to the user's driving habits and scenarios, meeting daily driving needs. The range-extending energy zone can utilize high-energy-density self-healing anode technology to provide greater power capacity, catering to users' long-distance travel requirements.

Three cross-chemistry system dual-core solutions were unveiled at the event:

Sodium-Iron Dual Core Battery: Sodium-ion battery + LFP self-healing anode battery, fully leveraging the low-temperature performance of the sodium-ion battery to provide users with an ultimate experience that goes beyond low temperature to achieve long-distance travel.

Iron-Iron Dual Core Battery: Second generation SHENXING superfast charging battery + LFP self-healing anode battery, easily achieving a pure electric range of 1,000 kilometers in models with a wheelbase close to 3 meters, while reducing the commuting cost per kilometer to as low as 0.1 RMB.

Ternary-Iron/Dual-Ternary Dual Core Battery: Ternary battery + LFP self-healing anode battery, with the ternary battery in the main energy zone achieving a peak charging rate of 12C, providing over 1 megawatt of strong power. Even when the battery level is as low as 20%, it can still output over 600kW of power. The upgraded version – the SHENERGI "Dual-Ternary" Twin Core Battery, composed of a ternary battery + a ternary self-healing anode battery – can achieve a battery capacity exceeding 180 kWh in a sedan with a 3-meter wheelbase, with a pure electric range exceeding 1,500 kilometers.

CATL's SHENERGI Twin Core Battery, centered around user needs, allows different chemical systems to fully "collaborate and complement each other's strengths," breaking through the technical bottleneck of a single chemical system struggling to cover all scenarios. This makes it possible to customize battery performance for different cost ranges and application scenarios.

This innovative architecture, moving from dual-core to multi-core, will not be limited to the new energy passenger vehicle sector but will also be implemented in electric buses, heavy-duty trucks, aircraft, ships, industrial and commercial applications, accelerating the industrialization of new energy across all scenarios. It will also expedite the application process of cutting-edge technologies such as solid-state batteries.

Second Generation SHENXING Superfast Charging Battery: Once Again Breaking Global Supercharging Records

In 2023, CATL launched the first generation SHENXING superfast charging battery, ushering in an era of universal supercharging. The release of CATL's second generation SHENXING battery once again breaks the upper limit of global supercharging performance, setting a new record for supercharging rates.

CATL's second generation SHENXING Superfast Charging Battery is the world's first LFP battery that simultaneously achieves an 800-kilometer range and a peak 12C supercharging speed, with a peak charging power of 1.3 megawatts. This enables a seamless energy replenishment of 2.5 kilometers per second. In a low-temperature environment of -10℃, the second generation SHENXING superfast charging battery can replenish from 5% to 80% SOC in 15 minutes, a 100% improvement compared to the current highest charging level in the industry!

Furthermore, CATL's second generation SHENXING superfast charging battery provides strong power across the entire temperature range and SOC range: even in a depleted state, it still has an output power of 830kW; in the harsh environment of -10℃ low-temperature depletion, it can still easily meet the power requirements for 0-100 km/h acceleration.

The essence of multi-core batteries signifies a shift in the power battery industry from being "parameter-driven" to being "demand-led." CATL, through continuous exploration and breakthroughs at the frontiers of technology, is opening a multi-core era for the new energy industry.
