According to Official Account @PV-Dao, the Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG) of Colombia recently passed a groundbreaking resolution formally granting legal status to "energy communities." This means that ordinary citizens, community organizations, or businesses can now jointly invest in renewable energy projects and sell surplus electricity to the national grid, truly transitioning from "electricity consumers" to "electricity producers."
The core of this new policy lies in breaking the traditional energy monopoly. Through innovative "virtual boundary aggregation" technology, it allows power generation units from different regions to overcome geographical limitations and operate within a unified electricity market. The government anticipates that this reform will add at least 1GW of renewable energy installed capacity to the national grid, significantly increasing the proportion of clean energy.
For remote regions like the Caribbean, which have long faced power shortages, this policy is a timely relief. Minister of Mines and Energy Edwin Palma specifically emphasized that energy communities in these areas will receive special government subsidies for installing solar power equipment. This will not only ensure a stable power supply but also significantly reduce electricity costs for residents.
Industry analysts believe that this reform will reshape Colombia's energy landscape. On the one hand, the widespread adoption of distributed generation will enhance grid resilience. On the other hand, ordinary citizens, by participating in energy communities, can not only reduce their own electricity bills but also earn additional income by selling electricity. As more communities join, Colombia is expected to become a benchmark for energy transition in Latin America.
Currently, the Ministry of Energy has opened a special consultation channel where groups interested in forming energy communities can obtain policy interpretations, technical support, and guidance on subsidy applications. This bottom-up energy revolution is unfolding across Colombia.
