According to People's Daily, on December 18, local time in Laos, CGN’s Phase I 1 GW Solar PV Project for the Northern Laos Interconnected Clean Energy Base officially commenced construction. This marks the first large-scale solar PV project in Laos. The Northern Laos Interconnected Clean Energy Base Project, developed by CGN, is a key supporting power project for China-Laos power interconnection. Located in the northern provinces of Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, and Phongsaly, the project is designed to create a comprehensive clean energy base integrating wind, solar, and biomass energy. Through an innovative interconnected model, the project aims to transform Laos’ natural advantages into economic benefits, expand China-Laos power mutual support, and achieve shared resources, complementary markets, and industrial synergy between the two countries.
Phase I of the solar PV project, with an installed capacity of 1 GW, is situated in the districts of Muang Xay and Namo in Oudomxay Province, northern Laos. Upon completion and commissioning, the project is expected to generate approximately 1.7 billion kWh of electricity annually, sufficient to meet the annual electricity needs of about 10 million households. The clean electricity generated will be transmitted to Yunnan Province through the China-Laos 500 kV power grid interconnection project, supporting Yunnan's energy transition and power supply stability.
According to statistics, the Phase I project will involve over 40 Chinese enterprises from the new energy manufacturing, construction, and installation sectors, alongside more than 30 local Lao companies in construction, machinery supply, and raw material provision. During construction, the project will create thousands of jobs, contribute to establishing and improving Laos' new energy industrial chain, and drive local economic and social development.
