Trina Solar plans to develop Australia's largest energy storage project
2024-09-25 17:03

Recently, Trina Solar has submitted a development application to relevant Australian authorities, planning to develop a large-scale energy storage project with a capacity of up to 660MW/2640MWh in Perth, the capital of Western Australia.

If the plans are approved, the facility would become Australia’s largest energy storage project, surpassing the Collie energy storage project being built in the same state by French renewable energy developer Neoen.

Trina Solar plans to start construction work in the third quarter of 2026, with a construction period of about two years. Currently, the project has not yet selected contractors and suppliers.

Australia is becoming the world's most attractive energy storage market. According to the latest research by Rystad Energy, among the 39 power markets in the world, the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) has the largest daily electricity price fluctuations, and is known as the world's "most unstable power market". It urgently needs energy storage to balance it, and it is estimated that 46GW/640GWh of energy storage will be needed by 2050.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) believes that the actual market demand is even greater, and may require 550-950GWh of energy storage capacity.

Seeing the huge potential of Australia's energy storage market, Trina Solar is vigorously developing the Australian energy storage market. At present, the company is also promoting two other energy storage projects in Victoria and South Australia, with energy storage capacities of 500MW/1000MWh and 270MW/540MWh respectively.
