Germany adds over 7.5GW of new PV installations in H1 2024

According to the German Federal Network Agency , Germany has installed 7.5GW of installed solar PV capacity in the first half of 2024.

These figures represent a slight increase over the same period in 2023, and with the addition of 7.5GW of installed capacity in the first half of 2024, Germany's total installed solar capacity has exceeded 90GW.

Installed PV capacity in Germany has doubled in less than six years.

One of the most notable projects to achieve commercial operation in the first half of 2024 is Europe's largest solar project. Solar developer Move On Energy has launched the commercial operation of a 650MW solar PV plant in Leipzig, which is called Witznitz Energy Park.

Germany aims to install 215GW of installed solar PV capacity by 2030, which is the most ambitious solar target among EU member states.

The European country started the year with a record 5GW of solar PV installed between January and April, however, installed capacity in May and June was lower than in the same period in 2023.

Since March 2023, Germany has consistently added more than 1GW of installed solar PV capacity per month, the fastest rate of renewable energy additions to date.

By region, Bavaria added the most new solar PV capacity in the first half of 2024 with 1.7 GW, followed by Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia, both with more than 1 GW. By the end of June 2024, only these three regions had more than 1 GW of installed capacity.

Over-subscribed bids

In the first half of 2024, Germany passed the first phase of the Solar Energy Act, which reformed the tendering of large-scale ground-mounted solar and distributed solar.

This year, tenders have been consistently oversubscribed for both rooftop solar and ground-mounted. The terrestrial tender held in March this year saw almost twice as much capacity submitted as awarded, 4.1GW and 2.2GW respectively.

Only the most recent tender, an innovative one seeking solar plus storage capacity, ended up not being oversubscribed. Nonetheless, the tender earlier this month awarded 512MW of solar + energy storage capacity.
