The Philippines Sets Ambitious Targets: Over 4 GW of Renewable Energy Capacity Expected in 2024, Including 1 GW of Solar PV
The Department of Energy (DOE) in the Philippines is gearing up for a significant surge in renewable energy capacity in 2024. With plans to add over 4 GW of new power generation capacity, the country is poised to make substantial strides in its renewable energy transition. Among these additions, nearly 2 GW will be attributed to solar energy, with approximately 966 MW of solar PV capacity slated for commissioning by June 2024.
To expedite the deployment of these projects, the government is calling for streamlined energy permit processes from relevant authorities. This proactive approach aims to ensure the swift realization of the country's renewable energy ambitions.
Of the planned 1.985 GW capacity set for completion and activation, 966.3 MW is projected to be operational by June 2024. Additionally, an additional 495 MW is currently undergoing testing and commissioning, with the capability to already inject energy into the grid, as reported by the agency. Furthermore, the pipeline includes another 590 MW of battery energy storage systems slated for activation within the year. Notably, out of this planned capacity, 32.42 MW is already in operation.
The agency emphasized that these added capacities will bolster the reliability and stability of the grid, offering essential reinforcement to address the escalating energy demands nationwide. The anticipated surge in capacity is poised to mitigate supply shortfalls and mitigate the risk of power interruptions, especially during peak demand periods.
The majority of the projected power generation capacity is concentrated in Luzon, totaling 4.03 GW, with additional installations of 80.25 MW in Visayas and 52.50 MW in Mindanao.
The Energy Department has outlined a planned rollout of renewable energy projects, with 1.224 GW slated for launch in Q2, 1.35 GW in Q3, and 1.57 GW in Q4 of this year.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Philippines boasted a total operational renewable energy capacity of 7.77 GW by the end of 2023. Among this capacity, solar PV accounted for 1.67 GW, marking a 50 MW increase from the previous year.
Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla has urged local government units (LGUs) and government agencies to streamline permit issuance processes, ensuring the smooth execution of energy projects. Lotilla emphasized that by expediting these procedures, LGUs can significantly contribute to improving the investment climate and fostering economic growth and well-being within their respective areas.
