On 17 April, France's Engie Group launched the BESS Coya Porject in María Elena, Antofagasta Region, Chile, which is currently the largest energy storage system in Latin America.

The project is planned to have an installed capacity of 139 MW and an energy storage capacity of 638 MW, using the Battery Energy Storage System technology (BESS) to store the electrical energy of the Coya PV plant, which is also part of the Group. The system consists of 232 containers with an average distribution of 58 inverters, with an average annual power generation capacity of 200 GWh and a power supply duration of 5 hours. It can provide green energy for 100,000 households, and reduce the emission of 65,642 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Catherine MacGregor, CEO of the Group, said that Chile aspires to become a key player in the global green energy industry in the coming years, and that Chile is a priority investment destination for Engie, and that the Group is determined to help Chile realise its goals by investing heavily in renewable energy power generation projects. President Borich attended the ceremony and said that the Chilean government is determined to fulfil its decarbonisation commitments, which will require the public and private sectors to work together to better achieve this goal.
