Lightsource bp, a solar energy development and management company, announced on 5/12 that it has officially entered the East Asian market and will work with GreenRock Energy to jointly develop a 150MW fishery-electricity symbiosis project in Taiwan.
The capacity of the project jointly developed by Lightsource bp and GreenRock Energy is as much as 150MW and will become one of the largest fishery and electricity symbiosis projects in Taiwan. Construction is expected to begin in June 2023 and over 750 jobs will be created during construction. After the project is completed, annual power generation capacity will reach 210,000MWh, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 43,000 households, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 133,770 tons per year.
Lightsource bp is a 50-50 joint venture between Lightsource and bp, which aims to provide more sustainable energy options for public utilities, private enterprises, educational institutions and agriculture, fishery, and aquaculture through innovative solar, smart energy, and energy storage solutions.
Since its establishment in 2010, Lightsource bp has developed approximately 5.4GW of solar projects in 18 countries, with operations spanning EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), the Americas, and the Asia Pacific, with a target of 25GW of solar project development by 2025.
In 2021, Lightsource bp obtained US$1.8 billion (about NT$51.2 billion) in credit and trade financing lines from 10 large international financial institutions. In addition to helping Lightsource bp enter the Taiwan market and with the company’s business expansion and strategy execution, it will also accelerate projects in EMEA, the Americas, and the Asia Pacific.
Nick Boyle, CEO of Lightsource bp, said that the solar industry has considerable development prospects and potential in the Asia-Pacific region. Taiwan currently relies on imports for 95% of its energy and is vulnerable to external factors. The challenge of energy supply and the goal of sustainable energy generation make Taiwan a unique key market.
