Kymco Announces 3D Deployment Strategy in Taiwan and Aims to Establish 2,000 Battery Swapping Stations

Kymco has announced its 2022 strategy for electric scooters, and is prepared to expand the establishment of battery swapping stations through three orientations. The company expects to enlarge the current 1,068 battery swapping stations to more than 2,000 in 2022, providing a peace of mind for Ionex owners.

Unlike Gogoro, which deploys its battery stations in six major cities, Kymco has decided to adopt a “3D deployment” strategy in 2022 that will allow it to expand the overall battery swapping network and distinguish itself from competitors.

The so-called 3D deployment strategy will cover the east-west direction that traverses the Central Mountain Range in Taiwan, as well as the longitudinal direction that extends from the plains to the alpines, and the offshore islands, which sounds like an envelopment on cities from rural regions.

There are now more than 1,000 Ionex battery swapping stations. Kymco hopes to expand the quantity to more than 2,000 units in 2022, and wants to enlarge the construction of the stations in the alpines, Eastern regions, and offshore islands in the hopes of subverting its existing territory.

How did Kymco expand its battery swapping stations in such extraordinary speed? Around 80% of these battery swapping stations are wall-mounted convenient stations, with 5 battery tanks configured each, and they do not require groundbreaking procedures or large quantity of power cables, which explains the expeditious construction pace.

Assuming that 80% of the 2,000 battery swapping stations is convenient to set up, Ionex will have a total of 12,000 battery slots by 2022, and maintaining the same growth rate of sales to that of last year would yield nearly 1,000 units of sales each month. The total quantity of Ionex on the road is likely to catch up to the quantity of battery slots by the end of 2022.

Kymco, as the leader of Taiwan’s scooter market for years, has experienced a surge in sales ever since its announcement of the Ionex 3.0 last year, and it is catching up quick to the second place holder of the PBGN alliance, Aeon Motor. Let us wait for the day that Kymco subverts the electric scooter market and challenges the leader Gogoro.
