Goodyear Launches First Electric Car Tires, Maintains Performance Yet More Wear-Resistant
2022-01-18 9:30

Goodyear finally launched their first electric car tire, ElectricDrive GT, which is tailored to the characteristics of electric vehicles, allowing car owners to maintain strong torque and acceleration performance without depleting the tires too quickly.

Taking into consideration the characteristics of electric vehicles such as large torque, fast acceleration, and heavy chassis, many tire factories are developing new electric vehicle tires. Goodyear has finally caught up with this trend and launched the first exclusive electric car replacement tire, ElectricDrive GT.

Goodyear uses SoundComfort technology in this new tire, which has a sound insulation mechanism built-in to greatly reduce road noise. Design-wise, SoundComfort uses asymmetric tread weave and special materials, allowing the tire to have the same performance on dry and wet roads for all season driving.

"We understand that electric car owners want to be able to obtain better durability without sacrificing performance." Goodyear product marketing manager Andrew Lau pointed out that ElectricDrive GT is built on this concept and hopes it becomes the preferred replacement tire for electric car owners.

Goodyear ElectricDrive GT will be available for order in the North American market in 2022 with only one specification available: 255/45R19 104W XL. Basically it is the 19-inch tire type used on Tesla's full range of cars most popular with buyers. Of course, it can also be used on the Ford Mustang Mach-E, but not the Porsche Taycan or Volkswagen ID.4.

Interestingly, Goodyear is a partner of Audi and its two electric sports cars the e-tron GT and e-tron RS GT. These two cars will be equipped with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 tires when they leave the factory. According to the original press release, this tire will greatly reduce road noise and give GT owners the best driving experience.

From these two news stories, we can draw a conclusion that the newly released ElectricDrive GT is more wear-resistant and suitable for public use. While the Eagle F1 used by Audi e-tron GT owners is eponymous, being more powerful but also needing more maintenance.

Tires are one of the most important components of automobiles, especially in the field of electric vehicles. Tesla specifically noted when their most powerful vehicle, the Model S Plaid, was launched, it would not be able to run at a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour without proper tires.

With an increasing number of car owners purchasing electric vehicles, tire factories have begun to invest in this market. Of course, their primary goal is to become original factory designated tires, and second is to become the first choice for car owners when replacing tires. However, compared with fuel-combustion vehicles, there are still few options for special electric vehicle tires at present and there are few third-party service options. In the short term, most car owners can only rely on the original factory.
