U.K. to Inaugurate The World’s Largest Wind Turbines by 2023

The UK’s Dogger Bank Wind farms will reportedly use the latest Haliade-X12 MW wind turbine from GE Renewable Energy, which is known to be the world's largest wind turbine model.

The wind farms, which are currently set to break ground in 2020, will be located on the coasts of Yorkshire. The turbine models will feature a height of 260 meters, which is around the size of a 50-story building. The rotating diameter of the turbine’s blades is currently estimated at around 220 meters.

The Haliade-X12 MW wind turbine is said to have a capacity factor of around 63%, and its total power output will be approximately 45% higher than that of a common offshore wind turbine model. The capacity factor is derived from the division of the actual output of a power plant by its nameplate capacity. The average capacity of a typical wind turbine model ranges from 45%-60%.

The Dogger Bank wind field is currently a 50:50 joint venture between Norway’s Equinor and SSE Renewables of the U.K. It consists of three individual offshore wind fields, namely Creyke Beck A, Creyke Beck B, and Teesside A. The total capacity of each wind field is approximately 1.2 GW.

With a total investment of 10.2 billion euros, the wind farm project will supply the power needs of up to 4.5 million families. The Creyke Beck A windfield project will break ground in 2020 before connecting to the grid in 2023.

When the entire Dogger Bank project is completed, it will surpass the UK’s Hornsea One wind farm to become the world’s largest offshore wind field.

The project will enjoy the full backing of the U.K. government, which will refund the developer if the wholesale power rate becomes lower than its generation cost.
