After Chevrolet, Tesla, and BMW launched Chevy Bolt, Model 3, and I MODELS, respectively, Mercedes-Benz established its new electric vehicle (EV) brand "EQ", standing for "Electric Intelligence". With Mercedes-Benz' rich experiences in the car industry, it determined to strongly develop the EV industry.

At the Paris Motor Show in October 2016, Mercedes-Benz unveiled concept EV "Concept EQ" (as known as "Generation EQ Concept"). With dual electric motors, Concept EQ as a sport utility vehicle (SUV) can increase its system power to 300kW. In the future, the EQ series EV will be manufactured by Mercedes-Benz' German factories in Bremen and Sindelfingen.

Mercedes-Benz stated CASE as its 2020 strategic goals, which stands for Connected, Autonomous, Shared & Service, and Electric Drive. It hopes to play an important role in the EV industry by 2020.

“The electric vehicle is the future. That's why we're investing massively in a battery-motivated fleet and in battery technology,” stated Ola Källenius, a board member of Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz' shareholder). “With EQ, we're going a step further. Under this brand, we're bundling our entire know-how regarding intelligent electric mobility from Mercedes-Benz."

Mercedes-Benz planned to launch 10 models of EV by 2025, covering SUVs, sedans, sports cars, the convertible and commercial vehicles, so as to fulfill future market demand.
