Airbnb and SolarCity Partner to Create Solar Sharing Community
2016-10-19 18:11

Residential solar business can be further promoted – SolarCity, U.S.’s residential rooftop PV solution provider, announced to partner with Airbnb, the world's leading community-driven hospitality company, to power more homes with solar energy.

“Travelers, especially millennials, want a more sustainable choice,” said Chris Lehane, Airbnb's Head of Global Public Policy & Communications. “We're excited to work with SolarCity to make renewable energy more affordable and accessible to everyone in the Airbnb community.”

The world has experienced the hottest year ever, and 15 of the 16 years since 1998 have broken average temperature record. It is necessary to take more aggressive steps to fight against the climate change, stated Lehane. Cleantech Group estimated that staying in an Airbnb home emits 61% less CO2 compared with staying in a hotel, and this advantage can be further prompted by two ways – to extend Airbnb scale, and to use solar energy.

Program

When homeowners go solar with SolarCity, they can take control of their energy needs by using solar electricity that costs less than they would pay for utility power. Solar power also enables them to secure predictable monthly costs for years into the future.

"Our partnership with Airbnb demonstrates the important role energy plays in our everyday lives – including travel – and how clean energy can reduce everyone's carbon impact on the world," said Toby Corey, President of Global Sales and Customer Experience, SolarCity. "Homeowners that make the simple switch to solar energy can save money on utility bills and fix their energy costs for years to come. This partnership will create the first opportunity for many Airbnb guests to stay in a solar-powered home, and allow them to experience first-hand how easy it is to use clean energy to contribute to a cleaner, healthier society."

The partnering program called “home sharing,” and it represents a more environmentally sustainable way to travel. Every member of the Airbnb community in markets where SolarCity offers services will receive a rebate of up to US$1,000 cash back from a solar system. Airbnb members can opt for applicable solar solutions for their homes. Furthermore, existing SolarCity customers who become Airbnb hosts will receive a US$100 Airbnb travel credit.

The signing up form has been established by SolarCity.
