Saft Batteries Will Help Keep Bombardier Sifang Transportation’s Trains Running on Time on China’s High Speed Rail Services

Saft has won its first EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) contract from Bombardier Sifang (Qingdao) Transportation Ltd (BST), one of China’s leading manufacturers of railway passenger cars and rolling stock. Saft is supplying 100 MRX fully integrated onboard battery systems for 20 new generation ‘Project 807’ EMUs currently under construction for 250 km/h rail services operated by CRC (China Railway Corporation).

The nickel-based Saft MRX batteries will provide backup power to support vital emergency services, ensuring total reliability and passenger comfort for the Project 807 trains. Saft’s Zhuhai facility in China will supply fully integrated battery systems, comprising 82 MRX 160 batteries – with a nominal 160 Ah capacity together with assembly, electrical testing and commissioning services.

China is continuously investing in high speed rail and plans to have a complete rail network of over 120,000 km by the end of its 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), among which 16,448 km will be high speed lines. By 2015, China’s overall passenger transport capacity should reach 3 billion people. Currently, the first prototype train (CRH1A-1170) with a Saft battery system onboard is running on the Qinshen (Qinhuangdao-Shenyang) line for qualification. After a series of qualifications by CRC, the new 807 trainsets will be deployed on high speed train services across China.

BST is a Sino-Canadian joint venture established in 1998 through Bombardier and CSR Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co., Ltd. The Project 807 is a new BST design within the CRH 1 (China rail high-speed) family. It is an 8-car trainset (comprising 5 motor cars and 3 trailer cars) based on the previous CRH1 and CRH380D (Zefiro) platform, but with significant improvements such as the use of aluminium rather than stainless steel construction to save weight and improve passenger comfort. The compact MRX battery systems are contributing to this weight-saving effort as they are several hundred kg lighter per train than the previous solution.
