The Indian government has decided not to impose anti-dumping duties on imported solar PV modules. This may be a concern with the new government’s commitment to developing renewable energy.

Although there is not an official announcement, NDTV reported in an article that a meeting between India’s Finance Minister, Commerce & Industry Minister, and the Minister for New and Renewable Energy set a conclusion of not imposing anti-dumping duties on PV imports.

On May 22, it was recommended to impose anti-dumping duties ranging from US$0.11~0.81/watt on imported solar cells, modules, panels and thin films. These items imported from China, Malaysia, Taiwan and the US were all be involved in. Nonetheless, the recommendation was rejected near the midnight of August 21.

NDTV notes “Sources in the solar energy sector say the anti-dumping duty would have made solar power expensive,” as well as cites an insider’s comment: "If input cost rises, the cost of power generation is bound to go up. Who wants to buy costly electricity." The conclusion therefore is showing a relief to Indian solar business.
