German battery firm Akasol has announced plans to invest 2 million euros for the construction of a factory near Detroit to produce automotive batteries for electric trucks and buses. The factory’s projected annual capacity is estimated at around 400 MWh.

The factory will reportedly produce lithium-ion AKASystem OEM PRC batteries for commercial vehicles, which are compatible with all mainstream PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) modules. The battery will come in 25 kWh and 33 kWh versions.

According to Akasol, the factory will be primarily focused on the productions of "high energy-density batteries." Approxiamtely one third of its total output will be supplied to existing customers, including a renowned Swedish truck and bus manufacturer. The company is also actively seeking for customers from the North American market.

Sven Schulz, the CEO of the company, noted that the projected factory will be the centerpiece of Akasol's global expansion strategy to extend its reach beyond the European market, where it has been a leading supplier for commercial-vehicle batteries.
